Background

Founded on June 24, 1841 by the Catholic Diocese of New York, Fordham University is a private Jesuit, Catholic university which was established as St. John’s College by then coadjutor bishop of New York, John Hughes. After it was placed in the care of the Society of Jesus, it has since become a Jesuit-affiliated independent school.

It was in 1904 when St. John’s College became a university as announced by the president, Father John J. Collins, SJ, changing the name to Fordham University.

Some 16,000+ students are enrolled in its ten constituent colleges, six of which are postgraduate and four of which are undergraduate, coming from more than 60+ countries. Fordham University has three campuses that can be found in the Bronx, in West Harrison, and the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Also, it has its field offices in South Africa and Spain and a study abroad center in London.
